The History of the Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival (BIFFF) and the Collaboration with Auvicom
A Fantastic Beginning
The Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival (BIFFF) was first organized in 1983 and has since grown into one of the world’s leading festivals for fantastic cinema. From its modest beginnings to becoming an international reference, the festival offers a platform for horror, science fiction, fantasy, and thriller films, attracting thousands of visitors to Brussels each year.

More Than Just a Film Festival
BIFFF sets itself apart not only through its bold film selection but also through its lively and interactive atmosphere. Think zombie walks through the city, vibrant cosplay contests, engaging masterclasses, and Q&A sessions with directors. The festival is a total experience where film fans and creators come together in an energetic and creative setting.
The BIFFF experience is not limited to the films: it immerses our audience in a unique, almost magical atmosphere. This distinctive ambiance is something we’ve been shaping for many years together with Auvicom, our trusted partner. Thanks to the expertise of their teams in lighting, sound, and technical solutions for our films, conferences, and events, every corner of the festival becomes a space for wonder.
International Impact
Over the years, BIFFF has welcomed numerous renowned figures from the film world. Directors such as Guillermo del Toro, Peter Jackson, and Dario Argento have presented their work here. The festival’s main prize, the Golden Raven (Corbeau d’Or), has given many films an international boost. BIFFF is often compared to other major fantastic film festivals like SITGES in Spain and Fantasia in Canada.
Auvicom: Technical Partner Since 2010
Since 2010, Auvicom has been the trusted audiovisual partner of BIFFF. The collaboration began when the festival was held at the Tour & Taxis site, where Auvicom was responsible for both the cinema infrastructure and the visitor area known as the “Village.”
From the moment we started working with BIFFF, it was clear this festival demanded a unique approach. We evolved from improvised setups to fully optimized cinema environments, making the most of every space we were given. Each year, we raise the bar — and that’s exactly what makes this work so challenging and rewarding.
Tour & Taxis: Creative Construction in Raw Spaces
- One of the sheds was converted into a cinema hall with a capacity of 1,800 spectators. Auvicom installed a complete flooring structure to securely mount the cinema seating.
- The second shed was set up as a social space for the audience. Auvicom provided truss structures, atmospheric lighting, and sound systems for speakers.
Although the venue had its limitations, Tour & Taxis continued to serve as the festival’s home until the end of 2012.
BOZAR: Towards Fully Equipped Theaters
In 2013, the festival moved to BOZAR, where Auvicom not only handled the technical installation of three cinema rooms (1,800, 480, and 150 seats), but also began developing surround setups for film screenings. These included THX-certified sound and an Adamson Line Array for crystal-clear audio reproduction.

Brussels Expo: A New Home
After the COVID period, BIFFF found a new home in Palais 10 at Brussels Expo. Screenings now take place in Auditorium 2000, Auditorium 500, and the Rotonde 150. Auvicom installed a Martin Audio Line Array with surround sound, carefully adapted to the unique acoustics of each venue.
Looking Ahead to 2025
In 2025, Auvicom remains a key partner of the festival. During the edition taking place from April 8 to 20 at Brussels Expo, Auvicom will once again be in charge of the entire AV setup, including a state-of-the-art 7.1 surround system based on Turbo Sound Line Array technology.
